Easy Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken Recipe

Easy Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken Recipe

It’s all about the fried basil 🌿

Taiwanese fried popcorn chicken is quite different from the kinds in the UK. It’s not only the batter, it’s also that Taiwanese people can deep fry anything to go with it, such as mushrooms, tofu or small hot dogs.

The soul of Taiwanese popcorn chicken is definitely the fried basil at the end. The type of basil in the UK isn’t quite the same as the one in Taiwan, so it’s still quite hard to replicate the exact taste.

Instructions

  1. 1Marinate the diced chicken breast with the Chinese five spice powder, soy sauce, garlic powder, sugar and the egg for at least 30 minutes.
  2. 2Coat the chicken with the sweet potato starch and let it rest for 5 minutes, or until you can’t see the starch anymore. It’ll usually turn the colour of the marinade.
  3. 3Deep fry the chicken pieces at 160°C for 2-3 minutes until they turn golden, then take them out.
  4. 4Increase the temperature to 180°C and deep fry the chicken again for 30 seconds.
  5. 5Add a handful of basil for 20 seconds, making sure the basil is properly dry before frying.
  6. 6Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
